Today is World Motern Day, a day dedicated to the celebration of a vast body of musical work by Matt Farley. The official Motern Playlist & way more music is up on Spotify. “But what is Motern? & what are you talking about?” you’re probably asking me. Well, I’m not sure who I am. I think I used to be a cartoonist or something. But I can tell you that Motern Media is Matt Farley, is a musician & artist taking a wild approach to getting his music out there, which involves writing songs about everything you’d imagine there could be a song about. Love songs? Yeah, he has those. But who else has a song about eating cookies for breakfast? Or pooping into a wormhole? & who else has written nearly 20,000 songs? Probably not Bruce Springsteen.
Comedy means a lot to me, & I’m always gonna remember the stuff that blew my brain open when I was a kid, no matter how many years intervene. Although I can’t guarantee that in the event I get dementia. One of the cornerstones of my understanding of comedy is David Letterman. It’s been a while, as we say to each other. A lot of stuff has happened, but a lot of stuff always happens. Even in moments of external stasis there are worlds being created & destroyed internally each second. I have plumbed the depths of my understanding of the subject of creativity. I have questioned the very boundaries of my universe & then flipped the universe over to see if it was made in China (it was, but that’s not surprising). But I did notice one thing in all these weeks of interior fieldwork & little output.
